Salim Karimi: From University Trials to UEFA Futsal Champions League

Ahead of the UEFA Futsal Champions League, we caught up with Salim Karimi

Salim Karimi's journey to becoming a pivotal player for Manchester Futsal Club is as inspiring as it is impressive. Moving to the UK from Iran at the age of four, Salim has called Manchester home ever since. His dedication to futsal has seen him rise from university trials to competing on the European stage.

Early Beginnings and Discovery of Futsal

Salim's introduction to futsal was serendipitous. "I'd never played futsal until I was about 18. I saw there were trials for the university futsal team and thought I'd give it a go. I really enjoyed it and got into the team," he recalls. This newfound passion led him to trial for Manchester Futsal Club a year later, marking the start of his futsal journey.

Falling in Love with the Sport

Starting futsal at 18 purely out of curiosity, Salim was quickly captivated by the sport. "I'd only ever played 11-a-side football before. I was very surprised at how fun futsal was," he says. A memorable early highlight was winning the league with his university team, an achievement made special by the camaraderie within the squad.

Inspirations and Playing Style

While Salim doesn't have a single standout inspiration, he admired players like Falcao and Ricardinho, often seen in YouTube highlights. "I tried to pick up some things from how they played, but I like to play based on how the coach wants me to play," he notes. Salim enjoys the intensity of futsal, where every moment is engaging and impactful.

Challenges and Growth

Playing for Manchester Futsal Club has been a journey of ups and downs. "My first season was tough as the new player, but I eventually settled in. Then, I tore my ACL and was out for about two years. Now, I'm back stronger than ever," Salim shares. His resilience and determination have been crucial in his comeback.

Role and Team Dynamics

Salim primarily plays as a winger but feels he could also excel as a pivot. He emphasizes the importance of team cohesion. "You can have five individually amazing players, but if they can't play together, it won't work," he explains.

Motivation and Aspirations

Driven by his competitive nature, Salim stays motivated by setting high goals. "My aspirations were to win the league and qualify for the Champions League. Now, the goal is to compete and do well in that competition. Qualifying for the main round would be a huge accomplishment," he says.

Hosting the UEFA Futsal Champions League

The excitement of hosting the UEFA Futsal Champions League in Manchester is palpable for Salim. "It feels unreal, and it will continue to do so until we're actually playing. I'm extremely proud of the whole team," he says. He looks forward to the high level of competition and the chance to showcase their skills on such a prominent stage.

Preparation and Community Impact

Salim has been preparing rigorously for the Champions League, both physically and mentally. "I've been in the gym and playing friendly games weekly to stay fit. Mentally, I keep telling myself we can achieve whatever we want as long as we grind for it," he says. He believes futsal can greatly benefit young athletes by enhancing their football skills and teamwork abilities.

Advice for Young Players

Salim's advice for aspiring futsal players is straightforward: "Listen to your coaches, ask for help from your teammates, and enjoy the game."

Personal Life and Interests

Outside of futsal, Salim is a dedicated family man and a dentist. "I like to spend time with my two boys. When they're asleep, I enjoy watching movies or playing games," he says.

A fun fact about Salim? He achieved the best grades in his entire year group in high school.

Salim Karimi's story is one of passion, resilience, and dedication.
